This title of the Alexander Calder exhibition at SF MoMA, with some of his mobiles and stabiles displayed, inside and outside, caught my attention, as I enjoyed a leisurely weekend in SF, strolling on The Embarcadero, wine-tasting at Ferry Market (and shipped two cases of red wine that already arrived in Pittsburgh 😊), joining a DJ party (Burning Man crowd) on the rooftop, meeting up with friends in Palo Alto (Michi B, founder of Quantbot), including from IIT-Madras days (Sam Srinivas), wine-tasting at The Wine Room (you get the picture!), strolling on Stanford campus with Al Roth (discussing the recent news about potential UNOS changes, organ transplantation – especially the new paper Dynamic Exception Points for Fair Liver Allocation that provides the theoretical foundation for our AJT paper in bringing equity across genders) – and even catching the movie (in a AMC Multiplex):
Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant (or simply The Covenant) is a 2023 American action thriller film co-written, produced and directed by Guy Ritchie. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim. Its plot follows a former U.S. Army special operations sergeant and Afghanistan War veteran, John Kinley, who returns to the country to rescue the interpreter who once saved his life from the Taliban.
Competent. Predictable. Decent cinematography. So-so.
The reason for my trip was to attend the Neotribe Annual Investor Meeting, in-person this year, after three years on zoom. It was wonderful to speak with Founders who are recent addition to the portfolio – especially MetaLenz (out of Harvard) and ThirdAI (out of Rice), during a luxurious boat cruise with dinner and cocktails, taking in the delightful SF skyline – in addition to meeting other LPs (including Pawan Nigam), and, of course, hanging out in-person with Kittu – we decided to walk back together after the cruise to the hotel, catching up on personal (kids and such) and professional (investors, next two IPO candidates) stuff – and meeting the rest of his team (and hanging out on the rooftop bar with Rebecca M, a Cornell alum, and Chandini and Shub Jain, sibling founders of Auquan, a recent addition to the portfolio).
I am also excited to report that Neotribe has made its first investment in Quantum space: Atlantic Quantum, out of MIT. Indeed, a sizable percentage of Neotribe portfolio companies have University Heritage, a distinctive aspect of their strategy in identifying, cultivating and growing startups, that is, providing a nice platform for Academic Capitalists!👍
