{"id":12524,"date":"2026-04-25T16:17:31","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T16:17:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.myamplelife.com\/?p=12524"},"modified":"2026-05-06T01:03:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T01:03:24","slug":"math-money-and-morals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.myamplelife.com\/wp\/2026\/04\/math-money-and-morals\/","title":{"rendered":"Math, Money, and Morals"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<blockquote><p>On the eve of one of the most important exams of his life, Dr. Sridhar Tayur (1986\/BT\/ME) DAA made a choice that would seem almost unthinkable to today\u2019s aspirants. He picked up a cricket bat. The JEE, arguably the most competitive gateway in the country, was just hours away. Around him, thousands of students were buried in last-minute revision, clinging to formulas and facts in the hope that one final glance might tip the balance. Dr. Sridhar, however, saw things differently. \u201cDo you think the last four minutes of mugging is going to change anything?\u201d he reflects. \u201cAt that point, it is what it is.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>As I had mentioned previously in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myamplelife.com\/2026\/04\/tayurs-miscellany-april-7-13-2026\/\">Tayur\u2019s miscellany<\/a>, I was interviewed for <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Alma Matters<\/span> (of <em>IIT-Madras<\/em>), and here it is:<\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/joyofgiving.alumni.iitm.ac.in\/alma-matters\/alumni-spotlight\/math-money-and-morals-the-journey-of-dr-sridhar-tayur\">Math, Money and Morals: The Journey of Dr. Sridhar Tayur<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>In fact, like many students of his generation, his decision to pursue engineering, and IIT Madras in particular, was shaped more by social expectation than personal conviction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u201cYour neighbour\u2019s son gets into IIT Madras, your mother says you should too,\u201d he says, recalling the atmosphere with a hint of humour. There was no deep fascination with machines, no childhood spent dismantling engines or building models. \u201cI had no interest in mechanical engineering, or engineering in particular.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was <span style=\"color: #800080;\">1982<\/span>. It is a delicious irony that in 2017, I was elected to the <em>National Academy of Engineering<\/em>! (See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myamplelife.com\/2018\/08\/3-looking-back\/\">Looking Back: October 7, 2017<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Election to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Academy_of_Engineering\">NAE<\/a> is considered to be among the highest of recognitions in engineering-related fields, and often comes as a recognition of a lifetime&#8217;s worth of accomplishments. CMU is ranked number #4 (behind MIT, Stanford and UC Berkeley) in the number of elected members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as I know, no other IIT alum in the 1982-86 batch, across all departments at IIT-Madras, or even across other IITs (I obviously only consider the originals, Bombay, Delhi and Kanpur, okay, fine, let me include Kharagpur, since I am feeling charitable these days!) has yet been elected to the NAE.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other [elective] was in the Business School. \u201cThat was a culture shock,\u201d he says. In engineering, precision and correctness dominated. In business school, ambiguity, discussion, and persuasion took center stage. Case studies replaced equations. Arguments were built not just on logic, but on narrative. \u201cYou read a [short] story, and then you argue,\u201d he explains. \u201cAnd talking persuasively becomes a skill.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was <span style=\"color: #800080;\">1988<\/span>. In 2011, <em>Darden<\/em> wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/store.darden.virginia.edu\/smartops-corporation-forging-smart-alliances\">case study about <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">SmartOps<\/span><\/a>, my software enterprise (acquired by SAP in 2013), and in 2013, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/faculty\/Pages\/item.aspx?num=44377\"><em>HBS<\/em> a case about <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">OrganJet<\/span><\/a>, a social enterprise. Not quite the <em>Super Bowl<\/em>, but still had quite a buzz, and it was fun to reconnect with <strong>Jerome Bettis<\/strong> (who was my neighbor, in 1993, his rookie season), bump in <strong>Josh Shapiro<\/strong> (both had spent a few hours on our campus earlier as part of several NFL Draft related activities that CMU had planned), but the real treat was to meet <strong>Kels<\/strong> (who had performed the <em>National Anthem<\/em>, excellently I may add, just a little while earlier).<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMoney is just fuel for the rocket,\u201d he says, recalling a quote from the filmmaker <strong>Brad Bird<\/strong>. \u201cWhat matters is where you want to go.\u201d \u00a0This philosophy extends into his philanthropic work, where he supports initiatives in <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">documentary films<\/span>, South Asian American history, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">poetry<\/span>, and beyond, seeking not just to generate wealth but to shape narratives and create lasting social and cultural impact.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Related to NFL (<em>Steelers<\/em>, specifically), I recall fondly a 2015 fundraiser for the documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/jtninc.org\">Journey to Normal<\/a> (by <strong>JulieHera DeStefano<\/strong>, in which I was an Executive Producer), co-hosted by <strong>Dawn Rucker<\/strong> and <strong>Troy<\/strong> and <strong>Theodora Polamalu<\/strong>, and supported by several Steelers, at <em>Hotel Monaco<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12570 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myamplelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3EAB4580-79C5-4400-9C86-E1D1C30A6CAC-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myamplelife.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3EAB4580-79C5-4400-9C86-E1D1C30A6CAC-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.myamplelife.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3EAB4580-79C5-4400-9C86-E1D1C30A6CAC-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.myamplelife.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3EAB4580-79C5-4400-9C86-E1D1C30A6CAC-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.myamplelife.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3EAB4580-79C5-4400-9C86-E1D1C30A6CAC-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.myamplelife.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3EAB4580-79C5-4400-9C86-E1D1C30A6CAC-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.myamplelife.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3EAB4580-79C5-4400-9C86-E1D1C30A6CAC-420x420.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.myamplelife.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3EAB4580-79C5-4400-9C86-E1D1C30A6CAC-840x840.jpg 840w, https:\/\/www.myamplelife.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3EAB4580-79C5-4400-9C86-E1D1C30A6CAC-1130x1130.jpg 1130w, https:\/\/www.myamplelife.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3EAB4580-79C5-4400-9C86-E1D1C30A6CAC.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talking about poetry, looking forward to meeting with <strong>Simon Armitage<\/strong> (and of course, attending his readings, yes, two of them, one at CMU and the other, as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalpoetryforum.org\"><em>International Poetry Forum<\/em><\/a>, at the neighboring <em>Heinz Chapel<\/em>) on Tuesday April 28. It has box office receipts of over $1.52 billion (on a budget of $225 million).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps, with sufficient amount of accumulated <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Karma Points<\/span><\/em> in this life, who knows how it will play out in my next one! After all, all this is supposedly just<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em>Lila<\/em>\u00a0(Sanskrit: \u0932\u0940\u0932\u093e,\u00a0<em data-sfc-root=\"c\" data-sfc-cb=\"\">l\u012bl\u0101<\/em>) is a foundational Hindu concept translating to\u00a0&#8220;divine play,&#8221; &#8220;sport,&#8221; or &#8220;spontaneity&#8221;. It describes the cosmos not as a rigid creation, but as a spontaneous, aimless display of the Divine (<em>Brahman<\/em>).
