True Lies<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is a 1994 American\u00a0action comedy film\u00a0written and directed by\u00a0James Cameron. It stars\u00a0Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, is based on the 1991 French\u00a0comedy film\u00a0La Totale!<\/em> The film follows U.S. government agent Harry Tasker (Schwarzenegger), who struggles to balance his double life as a spy with his familial duties. It had a box office of over $378 million on a budget of about $100 million.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The California Transparency in Supply Chains Act (written in 2010), which became effective on January 1, 2012,\u00a0empowers California consumers to join the fight against human trafficking by giving them access to information about retailers’ and manufacturers’ efforts to eradicate such labor practices from their supply chains.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Talking about spies, perhaps the most gripping book that I have read in recent years (and way better than the movie, now streaming on Netflix<\/em>):<\/p>\n

All the Old Knives<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is a 2022 American\u00a0spy thriller\u00a0film directed by\u00a0Janus Metz Pedersen\u00a0and written by\u00a0Olen Steinhauer. It is based on Steinhauer’s 2015 novel of the same name. The film stars\u00a0Chris Pine,\u00a0Thandiwe Newton,\u00a0Laurence Fishburne,\u00a0Jonathan Pryce\u00a0and\u00a0David Dawson.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Olen Steinhauer<\/span> also created the TV series\u00a0Berlin Station<\/em>, focused on a fictional\u00a0Central Intelligence Agency\u00a0branch operating in\u00a0Berlin, which is very good. For a recent series (that could have been better, but since I am really missing John le Carr\u00e9<\/span>\u00a0and found his last book Silverview<\/em> a bit light and unsatisfying) that begins slowly, but then gets pretty intense:<\/p>\n

Slow Horses<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is a\u00a0spy thriller\u00a0television series based on the 2010 novel of the same name by\u00a0Mick Herron starring Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Of course, there is:<\/p>\n

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is a 2011\u00a0Cold War\u00a0spy\u00a0thriller film, based on\u00a0John le Carr\u00e9’s 1974\u00a0novel of the same name. The film stars\u00a0Gary Oldman\u00a0as\u00a0George Smiley, with\u00a0Colin Firth,\u00a0Tom Hardy,\u00a0John Hurt,\u00a0Toby Jones,\u00a0Mark Strong,\u00a0Benedict Cumberbatch,\u00a0Ciar\u00e1n Hinds,\u00a0David Dencik and\u00a0Kathy Burke\u00a0supporting.\u00a0The film received three\u00a0Oscar\u00a0nominations:\u00a0Best Adapted Screenplay,\u00a0Best Original Score, and for Oldman,\u00a0Best Actor. It had box office of over $81 million on a budget of $21 million.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Another gem of a movie is:<\/p>\n

A Most Wanted Man<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is a 2014\u00a0espionage\u00a0thriller film\u00a0based on the 2008\u00a0novel of the same name\u00a0by\u00a0John le Carr\u00e9, The film stars\u00a0Philip Seymour Hoffman,\u00a0Rachel McAdams and Willem Dafoe.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As I recently re-watched:<\/p>\n

The Russia House<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is a 1990 American\u00a0spy film\u00a0 starring\u00a0Sean Connery,\u00a0Michelle Pfeiffer and\u00a0Roy Scheider. Tom Stoppard\u00a0wrote the screenplay based on\u00a0John le Carr\u00e9’s 1989\u00a0novel of the same name.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I wondered if the \u201cQuantum Race\u201d allegedly in progress (\u201cChina is winning!\u201d) is simply a contemporary version of the cold-war hoax to keep the agencies (DARPA, NSF, DoD, DoE etc) funding flowing, of which I am a recent beneficiary ☺️: see A Floquet Connection<\/a>.<\/p>\n
