Anatomy of a Fall (Rotten Tomatoes 96%) is a 2023 French courtroom drama thriller film directed by Justine Triet from a screenplay she co-wrote with Arthur Harari. It stars Sandra Hüller as a writer trying to prove her innocence in her husband’s death. Anatomy of a Fall premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2023, where it won the Palme d’Or.
I saw it on Amazon Prime – my first streaming movie of 2024 – and it immediately reminded me of the masterpiece (see also my post from January 2020 that mentions several foreign films that I have liked over the years) and I was happy that it won several awards at the Golden Globes:
A Separation is a 2011 Iranian drama film written and directed by Asghar Farhadi. A Separation won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2012, becoming the first Iranian film to win the award. It was the first Iranian film to win the Golden Bear. It also won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.
My first movie (in a theater) in 2024:
Godzilla Minus One (Rotten Tomatoes 98%) is a 2023 Japanese epic kaiju film directed, written, and with visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki. It has grossed over $94 million (on a budget of under $15 million).

Now to some academic stuff. Many of us (in the INFORMS community) received this email:
Happy New Year! I wish all the best for you and all your loved ones for 2024.
I want to bring to your attention issue 1 of 2024 of IMAMAN (IMA Journal of Management Mathematics), which was published just before Christmas. I encourage you to have a look!
Notably, this issue sees the introduction of the Insights from Thought Leaders initiative. The first such article is an invited editorial by Sridhar Tayur of Carnegie Mellon entitled, “The Audacity of BOPE”.
All papers are either open access or have been made available for free to read by Oxford University Press (OUP). I hope you enjoy engaging with our journal. Please do get in touch if you have any queries and, of course, we look forward to receiving your submissions!
Once again, Happy New Year and all the best for 2024.
Sweet! Even better is a notification I received that two of my quantum papers are now published (Jan 5, 2024) online in the special issue of Frontiers of Computer Science, Experience with Quantum Annealing Computation:
I was also happy that Oppenheimer won several awards at the Golden Globes, and Barbie too, especially with Billie Eilish (and her brother Phineas) winning for (see also 2022 Academy Awards):
What was I made for?
Curiously, the final section of my invited article The Audacity of BOPE is:
What are we doing here?
