Anatomy of a Fall (Rotten Tomatoes 96%) is a 2023 French courtroom drama thriller film directed by Justine Triet from a screenplay she co-wrote with Arthur Harari. It stars Sandra Hüller as a writer trying to prove her innocence in her husband’s death. Anatomy of a Fall premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2023, where it won the Palme d’Or.
I saw it on Amazon Prime – my first streaming movie of 2024 – and it immediately reminded me of the masterpiece (see also my post from January 2020 that mentions several foreign films that I have liked over the years) and I was happy that it won several awards at the Golden Globes:
A Separation is a 2011 Iranian drama film written and directed by Asghar Farhadi. A Separation won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2012, becoming the first Iranian film to win the award. It was the first Iranian film to win the Golden Bear. It also won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.
My first movie (in a theater) in 2024:
Godzilla Minus One (Rotten Tomatoes 98%) is a 2023 Japanese epic kaiju film directed, written, and with visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki. It has grossed over $94 million (on a budget of under $15 million).
